Biographie
DJ PSAR first falls in love with hip hop and its ever-expanding culture
after a MC Solaar concert in 1995. He is only 13 when he lays his hands
on his first vinyl, only to buy his very first mixer and decks at a local
market place a few days later. PSAR does not want to limit himself and
wants to go further than that. Above all, he wants to explore other horizons.
He hangs around in the graffiti circles of Brussels before plunging into
the rap scene. He writes his first few lyrics and quickly becomes the
talk of the town. PSAR is invited to appear on 'mix tapes' and shows on
pirate radio stations at the time. He is even classified by a few great
names in the business as the one to follow for the next rap generation.
PSAR's days as both MC and DJ come to an end when he realises that he
has to make a quick choice between the two. He decides to dedicate himself
completely to deejaying. "I took whatever job I could get just to
be able to pay for my decks. I remember selling postcards at the traffic
lights and even arranging underwear at the supermarket" At the tender
age of 15, PSAR gets his first radio show on Radio Air Libre. He does
not hesitate to invite the infamous DJs on the Belgian scene as guests
and to establish contacts with them. Even though he is much younger, PSAR
follows in the footsteps of the headliners and discovers the infamous
Who's Who's Land and the mythical Thursday nights parties. A whole new
world opens up in front of him. PSAR starts circulating his first mixes
and releases his first mix tape in 1998. He then appears on several radio
shows as guest DJ. From observing his peers and mentors at the time, PSAR
realises that the road to being a successful DJ was yet a long one. He
decides that this can only be achieved through hard work. Soon after PSAR
is able to reap the fruits of his labour when he launches his second show
'Family Affair' on Action FM with his brother, DJ SEPTIK in 2000. He is
heard on air all around Brussels and his listeners start to acknowledge
PSAR as one of the most promising DJs around. That same year, PSAR decides
to go back there where it all started: New York, the big apple. There
he realises that while hip hop fans in Brussels form only a small minority,
they are a big majority on the other side of the Atlantic. Upon return
to Brussels, he decides to step up his musical game a notch. He starts
playing in some of Belgian capital's most notorious joints, often playing
alongside some of the big names of the business. "One of my most
memorable times was in 2000. I was mixing at the Sparrow, a happening
joint at the time, and I had barely begun deejaying in clubs. Before I
even played the first tune, people stopped dancing. 800 pairs of eyes
were looking at me wondering 'who's this little DJ, what's he doing here,
whatΥs he gonna play'. I had stopped the music. My first tune was Camron's
'Oh Boy'. No other DJ was playing that sound at that time. I stopped the
music and looked at the crowd. I kept wondering if this moment would make
or break me, then I saw the first few hands in the air as if to salute
me. From then on I knew the musical road I wanted to follow " By
2001 with hard work and time, PSAR breaks barriers when he starts deejaying
in countries like Greece, Germany, Holland and Tunisia. He becomes more
and more sought after by Belgian and European dance companies. Before
he knows it, he is entrusted with the spinning of the decks in the biggest
clubs in the country. PSAR is a DJ, who caters to his audience, but who
also dares to go further. His musical audacity will make him a forerunner
on the European market. In fact, given his musical influence, PSAR does
not rely on notoriety that he already has, which is why he is known as
one of the rare club DJs who dares to take risks. PSAR keeps fighting
the obstacles and strives to bring brand new sounds to mainstream. "Deejaying
is an art. I have to be at one with my audience but I'm not a juke-box.
Too many DJs nowadays stay on the safe side and only play what they think
people want to hear. This is not my philosophy. Don't ask J.LO to sing
like Beyonce!" In 2002 PSAR contributes to the launching of Brussels
only radio station playing Hip Hop, RnB and Ragga-Dancehall, Radio Vibration.
In addition to his two weekly shows, PSAR deals with the radio's scheduling
and programs. By 2004 PSAR is involved in the creation of MP Family, a
DJ pool with the new generation's finest. Based in Central Europe, PSAR
is from here on one of the undisputed talents on the urban scene. With
MP Family, he embodies the new generation of DJs in Belgium and elsewhere.
He continues to contribute to the success of Radio Vibration, now the
leader amongst independent radio stations. He is well recognised in the
world of dance: he is the official DJ for Dance Academy Tour and he has
participated in the European tour of 'Juste Debout' (biggest dance competition).
You can find PSAR behind the turntables in the biggest joints in Europe
and every Friday night on Fun Radio - Soul Station, the number one for
Hip Hop, RnB and Ragga in Belgium. The new generation is ready. Are you?
